Harris' Story

When I was growing up in Brooklyn, New York in the mid 1960's it seemed like there was a deli on every block. You could get a great corned beef sandwich with a potato pancake and a bowl of matzo ball soup 24/7. It was one of the things that I missed most after moving to Chicago.

Chicago has always been a great city for variety and quality of foods but the one area where New York seemed to have an advantage was deli food. While there are plenty of restaurants in the Chicago area where you can get a good corned beef sandwich there aren't many where you can get a true New York Style deli experience and if you live in the south suburbs you have to travel a good distance for that experience. Unfortunately it's been years since you could get quality deli food in this area.

Our goal at Bergstein's NY Delicatessen is to bring quality kosher style delicacies back to the south suburbs. Sometimes it seems like my family and I have been working on this our whole lives. When I was young my father and grandfather would try to top each other every Sunday by seeing who could find the best deli food in the city and anytime anyone in the family came up with a particularly good sandwich, salad, or soup it would be announced, "This is going on the menu for our deli".

We feature many of our own recipes for deli favorites such as sweet and sour cabbage soup, matzo ball soup, white fish salad, BBQ salmon salad, and tuna salad among others. We encourage you to sample any of our quality deli products and hope you will find something new and different each time you visit us. If there is a favorite deli item of yours that we don't carry, let us know and we'll do our best to find it for you. We want you to enjoy this as much as we do.
